The Many Voices of Roar
by Khadijah
You know
this roar
of mine
comes
as
a whisper
a cry
a hard look
that pins you
to the wall
a hand held out
STOP
a push
a low, languorous
slide
bodies
locked
released
This roar
fills me up
so close to
bursting
my skin can’t hold it
in
A child
pleading
to God
Let my mother live
A mother’s cry
as bombs fall
heedless
of where they land
whose limbs they
sever
Let my children live
Wrapping justice
around
strong, supple body
flinging it like
sweat from a runner’s brow
hot embers rain down
I welcome the fallout
it means
Strike One
a beginning
A human,
shredded by
injustice
pain
cruelty
hatred
weaves a roar
of broken shards
of glass
over
under
a dream of wholeness
change
made real
